Welcome to the site of Alyssa Casey:
As an artist impassioned by travel, languages, teaching, and the sciences, I sensitively respond to materials, history, and place to mine sites, surfaces, and contexts for new potentials.
I am enamored with all things paper and site specific; I have traveled the world painting murals, making public sculptures, and studying with such handmade paper masters as Victòria Rabal in Capellades, Spain, Roberto Mannino in Rome, Italy, Professor Kamori in São Paulo, Brazil and Paul Wong of Dieu Donné Papermill in New York.
The above painting is a montage of details of drapery from three Venetian Old Masters all hanging at the state art gallery of Berlin: Titian's Venus with an Organ Player, Carpaccio's St Stephen is consecrated deacon, and Tintoretto's Three treasurers of the city of Venice to San Marco (Marco da Molin, Niccolo Zane, Carlo Cornaro). I photograph the paintings, crop, rotate and collage the images on Gimp, and handpaint the resultant montage subverting the hegemony of the imposing male painters of old.
